County Health Rankings-A Healthy Competition

The health competition between counties become more tough and interesting as the new researches on these counties have generated the new county health rankings.

This is not the comparison between the states but it is a healthy comparison of health facilities of these counties,where a county ranks within its state on health outcomes and on factors that influence health such as smoking, diet and exercise, poverty and access to health care.

Top one is the Allegent county which is the healthiest county of the Southwest Michigan. The Kalamazoo County is the second one who is straggling to become more healthier toward its future.

St. Joseph, Cass and Van Buren counties are also having good position in county health rankings reports. The Calhoun County is in the last position of top 10 on both fronts.

The researcher,associate dean for public health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Patrick Remington, “We hope this begins a process of determining how a county can improve its health”. He also said, “Each community needs to think about how you provide access to care for people with urgent health problems, but you also need to think about why people are getting sick in the first place.”

The director of Kalamazoo County’s Health and Community Services Department of Linda Vail Buzas said she was generally pleased with the county’s rankings. “For a county that has an urban core, which Kalamazoo does, we rank fairly well,” she said.

Plouffe said “the health care plan has become a caricature. And if we walk away from it now everyone who supported it is going to have all of the downside and none of the upside.” Not passing health care reform legislation would be “the worst thing we can do as a Democratic party.”

On the other hand, Plouffe said, “if this passes, every American is gonna say, ‘Hey—nothing’s changed for me in my ability to see my doctor.’ Seniors are going to see that they’re going to get relief on health care costs. Businesses are going to see costs go down. Pre-existing conditions are no longer going to be an issue in terms of coverage. So I think we have to press forward here. Most importantly because it’s the right thing to do for the country.”

As to what strategy Democrats should pursue in a Senate with only 59 Democratic votes, Plouffe said “the bill that was passed out of the Senate accomplishes a lot of the president’s priorities or all of them: Lowering costs, ending insurance company abuses, providing coverage in a way that’s going to strengthen our country for the long term.”

Asked about plans to have House Democrats pass the Senate bill, Plouffe said, “to me, it would probably be the, you know, a sound option because I think we cannot wait in this country.”
“We were given control of the House and Senate in 2006, we won the White House in 2008, we have to deliver, we have to lead, and if we don’t I think people will rightfully question you know how well this has really turned out,” Plouffe said. “So we have to really lead on this and have the courage to do so. And I think if we do that in the years to come, the country will be better off in the years to come but I think also politically we’ll be better off.”

In a not-so-veiled shot at Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley and her failed Senate campaign, Plouffe said, “obviously what’s frustrating about Massachusetts is I think even a mediocre campaign on our side would have won that race.”

Sen.-elect Scott Brown’s opposition to Democrats’ health care reform proposals worked because “what’s happening now is on health care is there’s a lot of energy on the Republican party but even independents I think are being told, ‘Here’s what’s going to happen on health care: You’re not going to be able to see your doctor anymore, there’s not going to be any cost relief, you know, you’re not going to be able to get your procedures.’ None of that is going to happen and perhaps we need to do a better job of messaging that.

After meeting Raper several times over the next year, Dr. Siegal was so impressed with her and by the determination she demonstrated by losing 120 pounds that, in June 2009, he dedicated his latest book, Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet Book: How a Doctor and His Cookie Helped 500,000 People Lose Weight Fast (2009, Hyde Park Publishing Ltd., 320 pages, ISBN 978-0-9822728-3-19999), to her.

“A few months ago, Dr. Siegal sent me an autographed copy of his new book. At first I read the handwritten message on the dedication page but I didn’t notice what else was on the page,” continued Raper. “But the next day I was showing the autograph to my husband and that’s when I saw that that Dr. Siegal had dedicated his book to me. Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D., is a practicing physician, author, and weight-loss expert who conceived the idea of a diet based on a hunger-controlling cookie in the early 1970s while writing a book about natural food substances that are particularly effective at satisfying hunger. The new study was designed to assess whether treatment with an antibody equivalent of bavituximab combined with radiotherapy can suppress tumor growth in a model of glioblastoma, the deadliest form of brain cancer. It used an especially aggressive tumor line that behaves very much like glioblastoma when injected into the brains of test animals. Results showed that the combination of a bavituximab equivalent and radiotherapy more than doubled the median survival time of test animals and 13% were rendered disease free, an unexpected outcome with this type of tumor. The combination treatment was significantly superior to either radiotherapy or treatment with the bavituximab equivalent alone.

The study authors also assessed the mechanisms of the observed anti-tumor effects. Analysis showed that radiation induced PS exposure on tumor blood vessels and enhanced the ability of the bavituximab equivalent to mobilize immune system monocyte and macrophage cells to attack the tumor blood vessels. In addition, the authors showed that the bavituximab equivalent enhanced the ability of the immune system to generate cytotoxic T cells specific to the brain cancer cells used in the studies. These immune cells were able to prevent the growth of cancer cells that had infiltrated throughout the normal brain. Treated animals that became cancer-free were immune when subsequently re-challenged with these normally deadly brain tumor cells.

Dr. Philip Thorpe, professor of pharmacology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and an author of the new study commented, “Scientists have long been perplexed about the fact that many tumors seem to be able to evade the immune system, making themselves invisible to immune recognition and attack. The studies reported in this new paper confirm our prior observations that tumor cells conceal themselves by flipping PS from inside the cells to their outer surface. This exposed PS sends what is essentially an “all clear” signal to the immune system, allowing the tumor to continue to grow and spread. PS-targeting antibodies such as bavituximab mask the exposed PS and enable the immune cells to recognize the cancer cells as foreign, mobilizing immune system defenses to attack the tumor and inhibit its growth. Bavituximab has already demonstrated encouraging anti-tumor activity in multiple human clinical trials, and we believe the novel mechanisms elucidated in these new studies indicate that it may also prove to be an effective new agent against glioblastoma.”

Bavituximab is being tested in combination with chemotherapy in Phase II trials in advanced lung cancer and advanced breast cancer. Interim results in these trials have been encouraging, with objective tumor response rates that compare favorably to chemotherapy alone.
