Iran In Critical situation: Iran Protests
Iran is in critical situation due to Political instability and elections. Iranian authorities have warned against any disturbances during today’s celebrations, and eye-witnesses say police have deployed hundreds of forces in central Tehran to confront any opposition protests. In an effort to disrupt communications and head off huge opposition demonstrations planned for Thursday, the Iranian authorities on Wednesday drastically slowed Internet service in
Iran and shut down text messaging services, and an official said that Gmail, the Google e-mail service, would be blocked.
Iran’s telecommunications agency has announced that it has permanently suspended Google’s e-mail services and plans to roll out a national e-mail service for Iranian citizens.
News reports from Tehran on Thursday said thousands of pro-government demonstrators had taken to the streets to mark the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution that toppled Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in 1979 and ushered in the theocracy of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Such anniversaries are traditional days of celebration. But since an uprising began in June after the disputed presidential election, Iran protesters have used the cover of such public events to take to the streets. And soon after 10 p.m. Wednesday in Tehran, forbidden cries of “God is great” could be heard echoing from the city’s rooftops, a sign that opposition protests, the first since December 27, would go ahead despite the government’s efforts to thwart them.
The authorities have warned that they intend to confront protesters harshly. At least eight people were killed by the security forces in protests in December, and two men linked to the opposition were hanged this month.
The announced suspension of gmail comes as Iranian authorities have deployed force across Tehran to conduct last-minute security sweeps and warn residents to refrain from joining anti-government protests planned for Thursday, the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Fox News reports.
According to reports, Iran Protests, police have confiscated satellite dishes from residential rooftops, and mobile phones are being searched, and in some cases, taken by patrolling officials in certain areas of the capital where protests have erupted in the past.
Ahmadinejad is now at Azadi Square for his Iran revolution speech while the streets around Azadi square is mostly filled with “green” from reports we are receiving.
At the same time there are also reports of some clashes happening outside Azadi Square between the Iran regime and “green” protesters.
Karroubi was also injured moments ago when his car got attacked and windows smashed. He fled the scene according to people in the streets.
Criticizing the Government over the move, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said: “While information technologies are enabling people around the world to communicate like never before, the Iranian government seems determined to deny its citizens access to information, the ability to express themselves freely, network and share ideas.”
“Virtual walls won’t work in the 21st century any better than physical walls worked in the 20th century. The Iranian people are dynamic and determined and will find a way to overcome the obstacles the Iranian Government puts in their way,” he added.
Iran Protests, Iranian authorities tasked with upholding Islamic values have also been scouring the streets, harassing people wearing green, the trademark colour of the opposition, according to witness accounts posted on opposition Web sites.
Opposition leaders have called on their supporters to use the commemorations to protest against the government. The authorities have warned they will crack down heavily on any protests.
The Iranian opposition has accused Mr Ahmadinejad of winning the presidential elections last year by fraud. Since then, mass demonstrations against the government in Tehran have been regular occurrences. Hundreds of members of the opposition have been arrested, two of whom were executed last month.
The government typically orchestrates large, carnival-like rallies and demonstrations to mark the February 11 anniversary of the Islamic Republic.
For this year’s events, opposition leaders have called for protesters to demonstrate against the regime. That has set the stage for clashes between authorities and demonstrators, who have taken to the streets repeatedly to protest the outcome of presidential elections in June.
Opposition leaders have called for antigovernment protests to coincide with the official celebrations.
Anchors on state television, covering the anniversary, are repeating that “today is a day of unity.”
Iran Protests: Opposition supporters began their protests following last June’s disputed reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, which the opposition says was tainted by fraud. The authorities say the election was fair.
