South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford is filing for divorce.

It appears to be the final chapter in a high-profile political marriage that spent much of 2009 under scrutiny because of the soap-opera nature of Republican Gov. Mark Sanford affair and his cringe-worthy public confession that his Argentine lover was his “soul mate.”

Mrs. Sanford was not just his wife, but also his campaign manager and political adviser and popular in her own right among the South Carolina political establishment. She was unusually candid in the flood of press coverage that followed after the affair surfaced.
